The Residential Director (RD) is the highest level residential position at the Summer Institutes. The RD supervises the residential staff of the Summer Institutes to assure a safe, enjoyable experience for all students and staff. The RD takes a lead role in resolving all student and staff issues and assures that all problems are promptly addressed. The RD will report directly to the Director and Assistant Director of the Summer Institutes, holding regular meetings with residential staff and providing regular feedback about the residential staff and students to the Directors. The RD will also serve as a liaison with other offices on the Stanford campus, such as Housing, Dining, and Conference Services.

This is a full time position with substantial on-call duties. The RD will live on campus and will be a crucial liaison between parents and the Summer Institutes program, making him- or herself available to answer questions and resolve problems. This is a fixed-term position, running from early June to mid August 2009.

The RD will assist with training the residential staff before the program begins. During the program, the RD will monitor the work of all residential staff, working to mediate and resolve staff issues. The RD will ensure that program rules and code of conduct are adhered to at all times by students and staff and respond to parent questions and concerns about the program while it is in session. All incidents involving staff or students must be documented by the RD, including medical emergencies and disciplinary situations. At the conclusion of the program, the RD will provide performance evaluations of all residential staff.

Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Student Affairs or related field strongly preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Residential Life at the high school or college level. Relevant experience includes Resident Assistant, student programming, boarding school supervision, teacher, etc.
  • Experience working with academically motivated students, preferably in an intensive residential setting
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in an educational setting
  • Flexibility and willingness to work long hours
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times when dealing with staff, students, and parents
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Salary range:  Starting at $1200 per week depending on qualifications and experience. Full room and board included.
