EPGY Residential Counselors (RCs) constitute the majority of the summer residential staff. Residential Counselors play a crucial role in both the academic and social aspects of the program. Approximately six RCs are assigned to each residence, and provide supervision for all non-academic activities. RCs also act as teaching assistants, providing instructional support in the academic portion of the program.
The main instructional role for Residential Counselors takes place during a three-hour period in the early afternoon. During this time, counselors work closely with students on their coursework, either in one-on-one sessions or in small groups. During the late afternoon and evening, counselors lead non-academic activities such as sports and games, art and music, campus excursions, etc. in cooperation with the Activities Coordinators. Weekends include field trips and other organized activities, supervised by the counselors. This is a full-time residential position. Responsibilities of the RC include:
- Assisting with program set-up and closing, including arrival and departure days
- Leading afternoon and evening recreational and social activities
- Tutoring students in the course subject areas and providing support to instructional staff
- Creating an atmosphere that fosters social and academic growth as well as tolerance, cultural sensitivity, and understanding of individual differences
- Addressing the range of student needs and taking appropriate action when students are sick or injured
- Enforcing the rules of the program to keep all students safe
Qualifications:
- College-level course work in one or more EPGY Summer program subject areas (anthropology, archeology, biology, business, chemistry, creative writing, computer science, economics, engineering, environmental and earth sciences, expository writing, history, humanities, international relations, legal studies, mathematics, music, philosophy, physics, playwriting, political science, psychology, and screenwriting)
- Previous teaching or tutoring experience desirable
- Summer camp experience or experience working with students ages 11–17 is also desirable
- Creative and positive attitude, and an enthusiasm for working with middle- and high-school students
- Adaptability and willingness to complete hard work
- Demonstrated responsibility and leadership skills
- Ability to enforce rules and make good decisions
- Must be available for mandatory training June 20th–June 23rd
- Applicants who can be available for an entire program (for example two sessions for the High School Program or three sessions for the Middle School Program) preferred
Salary: The standard compensation for Residential Counselors is approximately $575 per week plus a full room and board package.
