EPGY Summer Institutes Residential Counselors play a crucial role
in both the academic and social aspects of the program. Each residence
has six Residential Counselors who provide supervision for all
non-academic activities, and who act as Teaching Assistants, providing
instructional support in the academic portion of the program.
Responsibilities include:
- Leading afternoon and evening recreational and social activities.
- Tutoring students in the course subject areas.
- Assisting with program set-up.
- Making sure students attend all scheduled Summer Institutes activities.
- Enforcing the rules of the program.
- Balancing a fun environment with maintenance of authority.
- Creating an atmosphere that fosters social and academic growth.
- Addressing students' personal issues and conflicts.
- Promoting tolerance, cultural sensitivity, and understanding of individual differences.
- Taking appropriate action when students are sick or injured.
The main instructional role for Residential Counselors takes place
during a three-hour period in the early afternoon. During this time
counselors work closely with students on their coursework, either in
one-on-one sessions, or in small groups. During the late afternoon and
evening counselors lead non-academic activities such as sports and
games, art and music, campus excursions, etc. Weekends include field
trips and other organized activities, supervised by the
counselors. Counselors rotate through a schedule of time-off during
periods that do not require the full residential staff.
Please be advised that the academic structure and social
programming for the international programs may vary; further details
about each international program will be provided to applicants who
are being considered for these programs.
