The EPGY Summer Institutes Middle School Program Physical Science course will cover topics in elementary physics and the earth sciences. Possible topics include elementary mechanics (Galileo's experiments and Newton's laws of motion), thermodynamics, geology, seismology, and cosmology. Students will be assigned to different classes according to their prior background in math and science, and the specific topics will vary from class to class. The course will include classroom instruction, daily problems and projects, laboratory experiments, and visits to Stanford laboratory facilities such as the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC) and the Lick Observatory. Topics are chosen according to their accessibility for students at this level, with an eye towards those of interest to talented and motivated middle-school students. |
