This course provides an opportunity to develop and hone mathematical problem-solving skills through interesting, challenging and engaging topics not normally presented in middle school mathematics courses. These topics may include logic, game theory, graph theory, number theory, and combinatorics. In the spirit of learning mathematics by doing mathematics, this course places a lot of emphasis on individual and group problem solving as the way to master concepts. Course assignments are comprised of problems at varying levels of difficulty so that even the best students are challenged, yet every student will complete them with a sense of accomplishment. Topics are chosen according to their accessibility for students at this level, with an eye toward those that are fun and interesting to mathematically talented and motivated middle-school students.
