The EPGY Summer Institutes Middle School Program Mathematics course will cover topics in geometry, combinatorics, graph theory, game theory, number theory, and possibly other areas of mathematics. There will be an emphasis on developing problem solving skills through fun, interesting, and challenging problems. Students will be assigned to different classes according to their prior background in mathematics, and the specific topics will vary from class to class. The course will include classroom instruction and daily problems and projects; the assignments will be comprised of problems at varying levels of difficulty so that even the best students will be challenged, yet every student will complete them with a sense of accomplishment. Topics are chosen according to their accessibility for students at this level, with an eye toward those that are fun and interesting to mathematically talented and motivated middle-school students. |
