This course introduces students to concepts in the earth sciences through hands-on activities. Throughout the course, students are taught how the many fields within the Earth Sciences – including geology, geophysics, soil science, oceanography, and atmospheric science – are connected to each other and the world around us. Topics may include earth systems and resources; air, water, and soil dynamics; ecosystem structure, diversity, and change; land and water use and management; energy resources and consumption; climatology, and global change. Students are taught how to approach problems like a scientist and design their own experiments. The course may also include a visit to the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, Hopkins Marine Station, or other sites of interest in the San Francisco Bay area.
