Although the EPGY Summer Institutes are centered on academics, the daily program includes a variety of recreational and culturally-based activities such as team sports, indoor and outdoor games, martial arts, art projects, dance and music activities, and excursions. These activities are intended to provide students with fresh air, exercise, cultural awareness and social stimulation. Some of the more popular afternoon and evening activities include volleyball, basketball, ultimate Frisbee, soccer, Rubik's cube competitions, chess tournaments, card games, board games, quiz games, painting, social dance, a cappella singing, hiking, shopping, and others. Traditionally, each session includes a talent show, a dance, and other special evening events. And, of course, to supplement the organized activities, there are always opportunities for informal social interaction, serious conversation, and lots of fun.
For the Summer Institutes International Programs, the daily activities will draw from the region and may include activities that center on the local art and culture. For example, activities for the Beijing program may include introductions to Tai Chi and other Chinese martial arts, Chinese cooking and cuisine, Chinese brush painting, Chinese calligraphy, and Chinese language.
