Interdisciplinary Paper Competition Prize Papers Published in Journal

de novo first issue

De Novo, OHS Student Journal

Six papers by OHS students, selected by the first annual OHS interdisciplinary paper competition, were published in the first issue of De Novo, an OHS student journal. The papers, written on a wide range of topics, represent the variety of approaches, subjects, and writing styles that characterize academic excellence at OHS. The collection includes an original piece of biological research, a fresh literary analysis of two well-known poems, a true interdisciplinary examination of a modern environmental problem, and three discussions of different problematic ideas in the history of science. The journal title, De Novo, a Latin phrase that is literally translated as “from a new thing,” has come to mean “from a new beginning.”  Using an old language to express the idea of renewal is particularly resonant as a representation of the Online High School, particularly the way in which OHS embraces both innovation and tradition in its curriculum, pedagogy, and intellectual goals.  Likewise, this journal will become new again every year with a different mix of student authors and paper topics, but its aim of displaying outstanding student writing will remain constant and is intended to become a tradition of the academic community at OHS.
